I have had these peaches in my fridge now for weeks. All I wanted to do with them is make a simple pie but life kept getting in the way. I would work all day or the house needed cleaning or I didn't have the prober ingredients to make the pie. what it came down to was excuse after excuse.

Finally today I went into my kitchen got out my moms recipe and started to bake. I preheated the oven and then went onto cutting the peaches adding the sugar and so forth until I smelled what I thought was burnt plastic... I look toward my oven only to see smoke pouring out of it. I hurried and ran and opened the oven door to see my sons plastic toys melting all over my oven.

Wyatt has had this obsession lately with cooking. he will go into the kitchen and open the oven door (yes its turned off when he does this...) and proceeds to "cuook" I haven't really thought of this being a real big deal.

I kind of of thought it was adorable. until today.

now I could of gotten mad at him and put him in time out but instead I just calmly turned the oven off and stuck Wyatt in the kitchen sink and proceeded to clean the oven.

this was no easy task. the plastic was EVERY where! I finally had to burn off the remaining pieces which made my house stink. every window was open and all the fans on full blast as my pie sat and waited to be cooked.

what made it easier though was listening to Wyatt sing and play with the water in the sink. the sound of his voice calmed me and allowed me to let it go...

Now regardless of "THE PLASTIC TOY MELT DOWN 2010"  this pie that i kept putting off finally made it to the oven after an hour and a half of cleaning it and getting four very painful burns in the process.

SONY DSC But Oh how I love a good peach pie.

  1. Mmm, peach pie! Was it worth the plastic meltdown? I think it probably was, especially because of the sweetness of Wyatt playing and singing. I love the water shot, too!

  3. The pie looks delicious! It sounds as though you handled the Plastic Toy Meltdown with grace. I'm not sure that I would have done as well.

  7. And the pie still looks fabulous!! I love how you listened to his voice and it soothed you, calmed you, made you not-so-angry, somehow.

Guess you'll have to take a peek into your oven every time you're ready to preheat, huh? ;)

Thank you for sharing this story and the beauty that resulted in spite of Wyatt's best efforts- or is it because of? :)

  8. I can't help but wonder if the smell of the peach pie baking eliminated the odor of the burned plastic. I can only hope. I used to think that only God was capable of the self-control, love and patience you demonstrated. You're an amazing mother.
