I call him Goose.

It was Saturday and I had the day off so I asked Wyatt out on a Mommy and Son date. He excitedly accepted, which thrilled me. I took a shower, put my best clothes on, doused myself in perfume, even wore makeup. I then tore off the tags to a new shirt that Wyatt wore, brushed his teeth and we headed out the door.

We first went and saw a movie. Ate a ton of popcorn, drunk a bunch of soda and even got a candy treat. Wyatt cuddled me close as he watch the bouncing colors on the screen and he feel asleep. I didn’t mind though. I had him close to me and that was all I cared about.
The movie ended and I stayed and watched the credits to give Wyatt a little bit longer on his surprised nap plus I wanted to hold him longer. Like how I did when he was a baby. His sweaty hair on my shoulder and soft breath in my ear. The only difference was his smell. It was no longer the smell of a new born but one of a toddler boy.

He isn't my baby anymore but a little man I thought. My thoughts were interrupted by the staff coming in to clean the theatre which was my cue to leave. I carried Wyatt’s heavy body out of the theatre into the light which awoke him.
“Mommy.” he said. “Movie over?” “yep, it was a good one huh?” a little confused he agreed. As I was walking him out the building I had this sudden urge to not have our date end.

I excitedly told him of this park that had a duck pond and rocks and trees and… and… and more. His eyes widen with joy and we ran to the car him “winning” of course and I quickly placed him into his car seat. He rambled off what I said about this magical park as I laughed. I rolled down the windows he asked me to “turn up music momma” Which I did with out hesitation. We danced in the car singin’ on the top of our lungs and giggled until we reached our destination.

He jumped out the car after I unbuckled him and ran to the trail leading to the pond while he tried to catch the cotton falling from the trees yelling “look momma!” pointing up “stuff is flying” “Yep, its cotton” I correct him “OOooOOOoo Cotton. its pretty.”

Each step we took he found something new. Rocks, leafs, bugs and feathers.
duckpond4
“perfect feathers” as he called them and each time he found something he yelled “MOM!! LOOK!! look a tis”

He then asked for his cowboy hat cause “me a COWBOY mom. uh gosh” he’d say. I ran to the car to grab it and he wore it with pride all the while finding new trails, bridges and s t i c k s.

We played until a storm started to roll in. Thunder roared but Wyatt was not ready to leave. So we slowly walked back to the car some how managing to find this cool hidden pond area that we had to throw his sticks into…

As the rain started to fall we were still pretty far away from the car but we didn’t care. We stopped at this dock and watched the geese and ducks swim in the water while I listened to some random story Wyatt was making up. and I thought…

Not only do I call you by random nicknames such as bubba, wy, Wyatt man, bubba goose, goosetapher, goosy and plain old goose (cause he’s a “silly goose.”) which I know will embarrass you when your a teenager but I am giving you the best possible childhood I can regardless of me being a working mom and you taught me that especially that day.
I know that you will remember our dates because I will even when your that embarrassed teenager.

I love you soooooo much Goose.

  5. You always make me want to cry. My little girl is almost 4 and I would have done the very same thing in the movie theater... except that she wouldn't have fallen asleep. They grow too fast. Your son will always remember your dates... and if he doesn't he can read about them on your blog.
